Temporarily uplift ServiceNow access form

The Washington release of ServiceNow introduced Time-Limited Roles, allowing admins to grant temporary access with an automatic expiry date.

While this is a step in the right direction for access control, it lacks key features that organisations need—such as approval workflows, self-service requests, and proactive notifications.

How It Works
-
Simple self-service form – ITIL users can submit a request via a catalog item to specify:
-
Requester (self or another user)
-
Start date & time
-
Uplift type (activity required)
-
Maximum duration
-
-
Automated workflow – Once submitted, the workflow:
-
Adds the user to the correct assignment group for the requested role.
-
Auto-removes the user when the time limit expires—no manual intervention needed.
-
Sends notifications when access is granted and when it is revoked.
-
Key Advantages

-
No manual admin work – Users are automatically added and removed.
-
Clear notifications – Users receive emails when granted access and before removal.
-
Controlled access – The form is only available to ITIL users, ensuring proper usage.
-
No approval bottlenecks – Unlike traditional access requests, this process is instant.
